Engaging Learning: Teaching Marine Pollution Through VR

Image
What are AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality)?    Technology in education is undeniably important, with AR and VR being standout tools. VR produces immersive virtual worlds, whereas AR combines digital and real-world aspects. Their primary advantage for language learning is that they provide imaginary or real-world settings; however, expensive equipment and possible technological problems are major disadvantages.   Our Task     We created VR-integrated teaching material that tackle the global issue of marine pollution. The material designed for high school preparatory class students has 5 steps. In step 1, a 360-degree video is used to introduce marine pollution and give students a unique experience. In step 2, another 360-degree video is used to discuss the causes of marine pollution. Step 3 provides a video that discusses negative effects, and Step 4 contains a video that explains strategies to prevent it. Each step is fo...

Activating Learning: Creating a Flipped Classroom Video for Teaching 'Places in Our Town'

Image
Hello everyone! Today I will introduce a brand new teaching approach: Flipped Classroom Approach. Let's explore!    What is the Flipped Classroom Approach?   The flipped classroom approach is a contemporary teaching method in which students study theoretical resources on their own time while concentrating on interactive and practical exercises in class. By enabling students to interact with the material at their own pace, this approach encourages active learning. It has several noteworthy benefits, including encouraging student-centered learning, strengthening collaboration, and boosting communication through engaging classroom exercises. However, it also has drawbacks, such as the requirement for strong self-control and consistent access to technology, which not all students may have.   Our Task and Process    In order to put this strategy into practice, Başak, Ozan, and I worked together on a project that taught language related to local ...

Creating a Corpus-Based Teaching Material

Image
Greetings to everyone! I always said that I would come across you with different content. Now I am here again with something else. We had an assignment to prepare a corpus-based teaching material and lesson plan for EFL high school students. With a student-centered approach that incorporates technology into the classroom, we created a course that attempts to help students with their grammar and vocabulary. Actually, we aimed for them to notice the difference between the use of 'many' and 'much', but while doing this, we integrated grammar and vocabulary knowledge because they also needed to know the words they are used together.    How did the process work?     We chose to teach the use of 'many' and 'much' quantifiers from the "Party" unit in the coursebook by MEB for preparatory students. By examining language corpora, we made it possible for students to identify linguistic patterns. For this reason, we introduced the COCA (...

Introductory Post: Back to Blogging with a New Lesson

Image
Hello everyone after a nice summer holiday! I am currently in the 3rd grade in the Marmara Elt department and I am progressing with all my strength. I will continue blogging here for another course this year. We remain our adventure with fresh content where we left off, and we must keep up our blog as the online portfolio for the course.   The name of the course that brought us together here again is Current Issues in Teaching. In this course, pre-service English teacher candidates learn the role and integration of technology in the classroom and developing technology-enriched lesson plans and resources. This course encourages moving away from the traditional, monotonous classroom environment by prioritizing technology and artificial intelligence in education. Blogs are actually a part of this content because we use technology while maintaining this portfolio. We create interaction by sharing our content with our audience online. By...

The Last Post of the Semester: Reflection on Technology Integration in English Teaching

Image
Greetings to everyone. This is not a farewell post, it is a reflection post. I will talk about what this course has contributed to me throughout the semester. Before this course, I thought the place of technology in English teaching was limited to slides and games. However, with the content of the course and the tasks given to us, I realized that this was never the case. For example, it would be a much more attractive and effective teaching technique if a grammar topic was presented using infographics instead of limiting it to a simple slide. Also, I had assumed that the communication skills course would only involve speaking exercises, but I was wrong. Speaking can take many forms, including podcasts and digital stories.     Each task in this course required technological and (in a few assignments) collaborative skills and could be integrated into a specific English lesson. The artificial intelligence and infographic assignments were a clear example of this, I ...

Chatting with the Valuable Philosopher Socrates about the Socratic Method thanks to Magic School AI !

Image
Hello again. I am here with the last task of the term. It was the task of chatting through Magic School AI with a historical figure of our choice about a topic we were curious about.  Then, we were asked to write a report about the interview and revise the report using AI feedback. I made Socrates my chatmate and satisfied my curiosity about Socratic questioning. It was an interesting experience because even though I knew that the person speaking in front of me was artificial intelligence, it really felt like Socrates had come to life. Even though we are used to the concept of AI today, I have never had a conversation with it before. However, despite this, I did not experience any difficulties in light of the instructions given. Using AI did not force me, on the contrary, it helped me access much more information than I wanted. Just write your question and click the send button! The information is coded into the artificial intelligence in such a way that I feel like I am ac...

Collaborative Film Review by Google Docs: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

Image
Hello everyone, since I love watching and commenting on movies, I am here with a task that I have enjoyed the most so far. We chose a movie we wanted, watched it with my group friends Başak and Belinay, and then wrote a review with the help of Google Docs.  We are glad we decided on this contemporary short film because none of us got tired of watching it. I will not give more details about the movie here because you will find enough information in our writing.   Each of us analyzed all the points and thus offered the reader a preview trailer before even watching the trailer of the movie. After completing our writing task, we selected peers (our friends Hümeyra and Yüsra) to get feedback and commented on our mutual reviews.   How was the co-writing assignment?  This is the first time we worked together on such a task. I can say that it is easier and more enjoyable than writing alone. We were able to make a more effective evaluation by ca...

Digital Awareness: Creating a Public Service Announcement (PSA)

Image
Hey, I'm back again! This time I came with a more challenging task than the others. We were asked to create a digital story and we chose to create public service announcement based on a story with my friends Başak and Belinay. So why did we choose this? We wanted to be informative and do a job that would be beneficial to society. We decided on our topic, inspired by the famous story of Little Red Riding Hood. By adapting the traditional story of being deceived by the wolf to today's children, we used it as a metaphor to symbolize dangerous advertisement-like messages coming from malicious people through online games.   How the process of creation went?  Frankly, the process was a bit painful. It was very difficult to agree on how to tell it and how to showcase it, but we did it! We used CapCut and iMovie for audio editing and Pixton for visual and video editing. After recording our voices separately and combining them, we tried to add impressiveness with...

Creating a podcast, wow!

Image
I am here again! This time I will talk about an exciting task. We created a sound rich story type podcast with my groupmate Başak! Doesn't that sound exciting? We wrote a short story using the words in our task instructions and narrated it. We discussed the unexplained death of an old fortune teller and their brief chat just before she passed away while reading a girl's birthday fortune. The girl doesn't believe in such superstitious things although the old woman is quite passionate about it. We also added sound effects to give a feeling of tension and fear according to the theme of the story. Task Completion Process:  Frankly, although I felt a little nervous at the beginning, I didn't experience much difficulty during the preparation process. We had no trouble coming up with ideas and started creating the story in our heads as soon as we saw the words. Since we prepared it during the holiday, we shared the story among us, told it separately and combined our voi...

Creating an Infographic

Hello again! Today I am here to introduce you to a fun activity. Our teacher asked us to choose one of the ethical and legal issues in the use of technology and create an informational infographic. I chose the topic of cyberbullying becuase I wanted to raise awareness on this issue.   As for the design process, frankly it was a bit difficult for me at first because it was my first infographic experience. Choosing templates and visuals harmoniously and researching-conveying information at the same time is not an easy task. However, apart from these, I did not encounter any difficulties. I created it using the Canva application, it's a creative app with nice content, but I found it a bit confusing to use. Maybe I think this way because I used it for the first time, I don't know.    What are the potential benefits of infographics in the English classroom?    Infographic is an effective method for quickly communicating complex information. Therefore, it will m...

The Golden Age of Learning: 21st Century

Image
Hello everyone. I wish to share some of my ideas with you about education in the 21st century. This age is a complete learning era with technology and the many applications it brings. Nowadays, learning is a comfortable, simple, yet challenging process. It is a century with many opportunities, but those who cannot take advantage of them are deprived of them all. Therefore, it is necessary to keep up with the time period before starting to learn.  Language learning is very major and enjoyable at a time like this. There are now many programs specifically designed for language education and consolidation. Thanks to 21st century technology, we can easily do and learn everything without requiring any effort, unlike in the past. With these new opportunities, we achieve more efficient results as well as fast and tasty teaching.  As a teacher candidate, I am pleased with the chances provided. However, I am actually worried that the information pollution created by these possibil...
