Engaging Learning: Teaching Marine Pollution Through VR
What are AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality)?
Our Task
We created VR-integrated teaching material that tackle the global issue of marine pollution. The material designed for high school preparatory class students has 5 steps. In step 1, a 360-degree video is used to introduce marine pollution and give students a unique experience. In step 2, another 360-degree video is used to discuss the causes of marine pollution. Step 3 provides a video that discusses negative effects, and Step 4 contains a video that explains strategies to prevent it. Each step is followed by questions concerning the videos. As a last (5th) stage, students create a brochure to inform others, spread knowledge, and share what they have learnt.
Process
I can say that it is not a very difficult assignment. We worked simultaneously to do this task. Other than choosing the 360-degree videos we would utilize, we had no trouble because we helped each other. It was an enjoyable assignment thanks to our collaboration and sharing of ideas while designing the material.
My Reflections on The Future Use of AR and VR in Education
Future education will undoubtedly take on a new dimension thanks to AR and VR. In contrast to typical classrooms, they provide an immersive and interactive experience that allows students to practice their language skills in real-world situations. Even though we are just getting to know them now, I think they will be indispensable in language classes in the future and I can't wait to use them as a teacher.
